UISGE 2012 - Helsingfors, Finland 9-10.2. Gamla Studentshuset, Mannerheimsvägen 3

Second annual Whisky Festival, UISGE 2012, will take place at the beautiful Gamla Studentshuset, Mannerheimsvägen 3, on 9th and 10th of February. The whole week 6 (6th - 11th of February) is dedicated to Whisky and named "Helsinki Whisky Week 2012", as main whisky bars, restaurants and pubs will host whisky-related events, offer campaign whiskies, special bottlings etc.

Scandic Grand Marina has graciously agreed to offer a discounted price to visitors from elsewhere during the week, book with code VIS080212 by 25.1. - rooms 79 eur/night 1 prsn, 89 eur/night 2 prsns.

UISGE is a cost-based, non-profit venture for the organizers, based on volunteer work and the co-operation with the importers. As such, we thrive to keep pricing very sensible indeed. Entrance fee is 10 eur, includes coat hanger, brochure and a printed tasting glass from Glencairn.

Thank you, I am personally really pleased with the guet speaker listing, which promises excellent & informative tasting sessions!

The finnish whisky scene is somewhat behind that of Sweden, but I am proud that we will host this event, and I sincerely hope to see many whisky aficionados, hobbyists and just plain interested parties there. As said, any help I can offer with your visit to Helsingfors, please just email me and ask.

BTW, The "Arkadia Alko" store (located just few hundred metres from the main venue) will also have a number of different not-before-seen-in-Finland bottlings during UISGE.

Såvitt jag vet är mässan klockan 15:00-22:00. Det var nåt tal om att några masterclasses skulle kunna vara t.om. tidigare. För tillfället är det lite öppet med huruvida man kan boka platser i förväg till tastings. Först andra gången mässan ordnas så många saker att fixa.. Tyvärr har mässan ingen hemsida, bara en fb-grupp så det är aningen krångligt att få tag på info..

Som JaRiMi sade lönar det sig att besöka Arkadias Alko, det är alkos flaggskeppsbutik och har därmed ett större urval än andra butiker. En whisky du t.ex. kan få tag på är Yamazaki Sherry Cask...

We cannot set up any website for this event, due to the rather "draconian" finnish laws, which clearly ban advertising anything related to alcohol above 22% strength. As you can imagine, this set up a few "challenges" to advertising, and getting the word to interested parties..! A closed facebook group, discussion board messages, and private emails are the only means of sharing information within the restrictions of law.

Speaker list now includes Dr. Imatomi from Suntory, and Vicky Stevens from Laphroaig distillery.

Many details are trickling in at last minute; Importers have until the end of this week to finalize the guest speaker listings, after that I shall immediately inform here on which days / times the speakers will be hosting their master classes. The 3 individual rooms where these will be held at (upstairs, 2nd floor of the Gamla Studentshuset) are sized at 25 persons - 35 persons - 35 persons, so I hope there will be enough seats for all interested parties.

This is indeed only the 2nd year we're arranging this event, but last year's venue was much too small and was quite far from the centre - this year we are more ready, and the show + offerings are much improved! I am very glad to see the interest here, and hope we can also establish stronger ties between the Malt Whisky Association of Finland, and Sweden's whisky hobbyist groups!

Blir även att kolla in Alkos flaggskeppsbutik och se hur utbudet på whisky är där. Är min första mässa så vet inte riktigt vad man skall ha för förväntningar men har iaf bokat in mej på tre masterclass och ser framemot hela mässan och skall även försöka hinna med några utav pubarna som är med på UISGE2012 veckan med specialteman och utbud.

Mycket lyckad mässa enligt min mening, blev bland annat Laphroaig Masterclass med enbart 6 personer så blev väldigt personligt med Vicky vilket var väldigt positivt. Kommer besöka mässan nästa år med! Besökte ALkos flagskeppsbutik och kan väl inte påstå att jag var direkt imponerad, normala svenska små systembolag har bättre whisky utbud, ingen ordning på whiskyn(inget system på hur den stod utan bara uppställda huller om buller) men vin avdelningen för den som är intresserad av sånt är helt outstanding! även bra utbud på öl.

Jag var själv också riktigt nöjd. Allt fungerade väl och stämningen var bra. Gamla studenthuset är riktigt fint och på bra läge. Passlig mängd folk så det inte blev trängsel eller köer. Alkos urval är det det är... Tyvärr. Tur att det finns webbutiker vad bjöd Vicky på? Var själv på en tasting hon höll och där fick vi smaka 10yo, qc, triple wood, 1981 vintage och 30yo cairdeas!
